I Have Cool Friends : Artists

2011.04.13 / Japan / posted by idrawgood

I've had the pleasure of being surrounded by incredibly talented people at different points in life. Here are some of those people.

Christa Joo Hyun D'Angelo ( www.christajdangelo.com )

christa ground I first met Christa in high school during an art seminar at Colorado College. She's living and working in Germany, so I feel lucky we've kept in touch, because her art just keeps getting better. She's a master of collage, combining pop objects, animals, and figures in a delightful surrealist mashup. I'm the proud owner of "The Ground Beneath Below Collapses at a Heart's Beat" (left), a sharp explosion of provactive imagery. Make sure to check out her books, photomontages, and collages.

Chip Boles ( chipboles.com )

chip obama Aside from being a quality human being, Chip is an amazing draftsman. What's more superb about Chip's art is that he delicately straddles the line between humorous and macabre. He can take subject matter that's somewhat dark, and apply his special brand of wit to make the images digestible ... and sometimes even delicious. Reproductions of works like "Obama vs the Evil (Un)Dead" are available for purchase, even on shirts!

Hiroko Sakai ( www.coton-design.com )

hiroko rain factory I just met Hiroko a few days ago at 花見 (a flower viewing party) in Osaka, so I don't know if it's presumptuous to call her a friend, but here's what I do know: her art is sweet. She approaches design with simple, clear concepts, and executes them with grace. Short, image-based stories like rain factory exhibit her command of dynamic composition, juxtaposition of texture, and subtle color. Their sparseness makes them deceivingly simple, which creates spaces that are familiar yet unnerving.
